The
Temple of Jerusalem was envisioned by King David and built by
his son, Solomon, as "a house for God's Name" 3000 years ago. In total, it stood for about
1,000 years - it was destroyed in the year 70 CE. But no amount of ruin could
dislodge Jerusalem and its crowning monument from our consciousness. Against all
odds, the Temple outlived its own destruction.
Though
barely a trace of the building survives, it still fascinates us. This special
issue of ERETZ Magazine concentrates on a place beyond the structure, attempting
to understand how this ideal presence has not only survived but actually thrived in the
minds of millions of people over thousands of years.
Published in May 1996, this special issue of ERETZ
Magazine has long been out of print. This PDF file is an exact copy of the
magazine that was sent to print 10 years ago.
